| Happy 4th of July! Panzanella will be open for lunch on Wednesday, the 4th of July, and closed for dinner. Happy Independence Day! July Farm Dinner Featuring items from Peregrine Farm Tuesday, July 17, 2007 5:30 - 9:00 pm Celebrate the abundance of delicious local food! Enjoy a special menu with exciting dishes created with ingredients grown by Betsy and Alex Hitt. This dinner will be timed perfectly for enjoying their brilliant and flavorful peppers and fantastic heirloom tomatoes (up to 20 varieties). Panzanella will donate 5% of sales from this evening to the Sustainable Farming Program at Central Carolina Community College. At the Carrboro Farmers' Market last Saturday, I asked Betsy what she currently sees as important for local farmers and/or for Peregrine Farm. She and Alex are very grateful for the support for local producers offered by retailers and chefs. Those relationships, plus the area's farmers' markets has allowed our nearby farms to provide more diverse products, and also to serve a more diverse population. More |

It is easy to see in Betsy's smile her deep appreciation for the increasing opportunities that allow local farmers to prosper while farming in a sustainable way. Also meaningful to the Hitts is service to the community. Both Alex and Betsy serve on the board of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, near Goldsboro. CEFS was established through a collaboration between North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Join us for this delicious evening, and be sure to visit Peregrine Farm's beautiful table at the markets. |

Brushes with Life: Art, Artists, & Mental IllnessThrough July 29 The name of this exhibit is also the name of a patient art gallery located on the 3rd floor of the UNC Neurosciences Hospital outside of the Psychotic disorders inpatient unit. It is part of the Schizophrenia Treatment and Evaluation Program (STEP) at UNC, which provides inpatient and outpatient care of people dealing with psychotic symptoms or illnesses such as Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective disorder. The gallery features artwork and poetry from STEP inpatients, clinic outpatients, and clients from Club Nova, a local clubhouse for the mentally ill. The initial goal of the gallery was to give our artists a permanent art space to display their creativity and art to a wider audience. Additionally we hoped to promote art and healing. We also target stigma associated with mental illness demonstrating people with serious mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective, and Bipolar disorder can be productive and creative. "Brushes With Life" has also had numerous traveling shows around the state over the years including the NC Museum of Art and the RDU International Airport. This August the gallery is slated for an exhibit at the Carrboro Art Center. The permanent collection is on display on the 1st floor of UNC Neuroscience Hospital. This exhibit will also include Peer Tree mirror frames handcrafted by artisans using the traditional techniques of genuine gold leafing and painted finishes. Each frame is a work of art uniquely designed, crafted, and signed by the artist. |
