'Green' Wine Dinner

Since March 17 is Saint Patrick's Day AND since there are no Irish wines to speak of, we ran with the 'green' theme for this dinner. Green can mean a lot of things, so at March's Wine Dinner, we'll demystify classifications like organic, made with organic grapes, sustainable certified, even salmon-safe. More

'Green' Wine Dinner!
March 17, 7:00 - 9:30 pm

Organic wines and wines produced sustainably, just like foods, are being sought for their purity, quality, deliciousness and even conscience. Many vineyard managers, wine makers, and wineries are practicing methods of sustaining healthy vineyards that were relied upon before the introduction of agricultural chemicals. Take advantage of this deliciously fun opportunity to taste terrific wines made with "green" ideals, perfectly paired with plenty of fabulous food prepared by Panzanella Chef, Chris Capron.

The cost of this event is $45 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella (919.929.6626) or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro (919.929.0010).
April Wine Dinner
Australian Wines
with Importer, Robert Whale
Monday, April 21
7:00 - 9:30 pm

For this exciting wine dinner, Panzanella welcomes special guest, Robert Whale, president and founder of Robert Whale Selections, importer of fine Australian wines. With 2 decades of experience traveling and tasting throughout Australia and New Zealand in search of unique, site-specific, boutique wines, Robert has become identified with top-quality wine producers from Down Under. The importer's book represents wines that are food-compatible with balance, structure and elegance. This is an opposite style of many Australian wines, which frequently offer more flavor and oak than elegance and character.

Please join us for this celebration of wonderfully made Australian wines, and meet an importer who dares to be different. Plenty of marvelous food will be prepared by Panzanella Chef, Chris Capron. The cost of this event is $45 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella (919.929.6626) or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro (919.929.0010).

Controlled Chaos
Acrylic Paintings by Catherine Carter
Now - March 31, 2008

About the Artist: Catharine Carter is a native of Chapel Hill and grew up in an artistic family. She graduated from UNC with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Painting and Intaglio Printing. After an introductory photography course in her freshman year, she worked as a darkroom technician at UNC photo lab and was a special event photographer for the University until graduation.

In 1975, Catharine joined the Professional Photographers of North Carolina and began her career photographing brides, weddings, families, and University events. She currently works as a portrait photographer at her home/studio/garden on historic Ransom Street in Chapel Hill, NC. Catharine returns to her fine art roots, exploring the process of conflict and resolution with the paintings in this exhibit. Emotions are expressed, explored, and challenged with color, linear movement and composition. In a process that Catharine likens to journaling, she allows uncensored emotions to flow onto the canvas, then imposes visual order within the chaos. The artist invites us to experience the process of meeting chaos and coming to resolution through these paintings.

Wine Special
La Doga Morellino di Scansano, 2006.
From the beautiful, hilly area known as Maremma, in Southern Tuscany, comes this luscious red wine, made from at least 85% Sangiovese. Lower in acidity than many Tuscan reds, Morellino di Scansano is known for a generous softness and fruitiness, which goes very well with rich, tasty food, especially when tomatoes are involved. The excellent quality of the wines of Scansano has been well known in Italy for more than a century, but the wines are still relatively unknown in the States, and still a great value. In recent decades, winemaking in the area has become more specialized and refined, an effort that was rewarded with the issuance in 1978 of a DOC, and then in 2006, with the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. The small village of Scansano is also known for wild boar. We don't currently have wild boar on the menu, but we love this wine with our Pork Shank at dinner, with any of our pizzas, and with the Affettati Misti on the lunch and brunch menus.
