This historical wine region boasts some of the most famous and well-regarded wines in the world. The Sangiovese grape is the heart of all Tuscan red wines. Are you ready to become one of them? We welcome Mike Tiano of Haw River Wine Man, to take us on a wine tasting tour of this great region, which will also include white and rosé wines. Plenty of delicious food will be served from the Panzanella kitchen to complement these wonderful wines.

Last Farm Dinner of 2008
Monday, September 15, 5:30 - 9:00 pm
Chapel Hill Creamery

Off Dairyland Road in Hillsborough, Flo Hawley and Portia McKnight use an intensive grazing system, which focuses on grass feeding with a small addition of grain. Their Jersey cows get most to all of their nutritional needs from grass during the spring and summer and revert to more hay and grain in the winter. The calves born at Chapel Hill Creamery arrive in the spring. This begins the cheese making cycle that will end in December when the grass is long gone and the cow is busy gestating another baby. This cycle is good for the land, the cows, and the people, who all get a break in the winter.

Our last Farm Dinner of 2008 will feature a special menu inspired by the premium, handcrafted cheeses made with the delicious milk and cream of Chapel Hill Creamery's happy and beautiful Jersey herd. 5% of our proceeds will benefit the Sustainable Farming Program at Central Carolina Community College.

"Preservation"
paintings by Mary Charlton
Now - September 28, 2008

About the Artist: Through the paintings in this exhibit, Mary Charlton preserves her memories of animals in their environments and of a rapidly changing landscape. The buildings and ways of life visible in some of this artwork are identified with a time and place (rural North Carolina) that is still familiar, but losing ground. The artwork reveals emotions, dreams, and the basic elements of life and earth. The artist's themes concern the earth and her creatures, boundaries and freedom.

Elephants: Mary sees the elephant as a powerful environmental symbol, grand in their presence, vegetarian, nomadic, with strong family units—gentle, beautiful creatures that can now only live where mankind allows them to live. As an Occupational Therapist, Mary had a client who was an elephant trainer. When the patient was discharged and returned to his circus family, she was able to spend time with him and his elephant. It was a wonderful experience, having close contact with such a magnificent, textured animal. Large and powerful, yet intelligent and gentle, the memory of that contact continues to inspire Mary.

Mary has been painting for 30 years. In August 2007, after 20 years as an Occupational Therapist, she left her job to enjoy a more creative life devoted to painting.
Featured Beers
This month we're featuring two draft beers from NC breweries: Hell's Belle from Big Boss Brewing Company in Raleigh, and Gaelic Ale from Highland Brewing Company in Asheville.

Hell's Belle Belgian Blond: This subtle, complex ale is a showcase for the brewery's favorite Belgian yeast and beautiful Belgian malts. It is deceptively light and refreshing with a citrus and spice finish, but packs 7% ABV (alcohol by volume). Big Boss Brewing Company was started in 2006 and shipped its first beer in the 2nd quarter of 2007 in the triangle area of North Carolina. It was formed as collaboration between Geoff Lamb, a UNC graduate, who returned to North Carolina in 2006 to join forces with Brewmaster, Brad Wynn, who has 12+ years of brewing experience. Big Boss brewery tours take place the second Saturday of each month at 2pm. No reservations are required, although they advise that you leave time for parking. The 30-40 minute tour is guided by the staff of brewers and will take you through the entire facility as you learn about the beer making process. Contact Big Boss: Phone: 919-834-0045. Learn more about Big Boss here.

Gaelic Ale is a deep, amber colored American ale, featuring a rich, malty body. Cascade and Willamette hops add a complex hop flavor and aroma. This ale is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness. 5.8% ABV. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina, Highland Brewing Company has been brewing great ales for more than a decade. From their best-selling Gaelic to the popular winter seasonal, Cold Mountain Ale (soon to be available at Weaver Street Market), Highland produces an impressive array. If you happen to be in Asheville, you can experience the smell of fresh grain and the roar of the bottling line by making an appointment to tour the brewery. Highland Brewery tours are offered on Fridays at 4 p.m. (but please call ahead) and on other weekdays by appointment. Contact Highland Brewing Company: Phone: Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at (828) 299-3370. Learn more about Highland Brewing Company here.

2006 Monmousseau Vouvray
With a light hay color and aromas of honey and ripe apples, this Chenin Blanc from France's Loire Valley is pleasing and delicate—mildly sweet, mildly acidic—very easy to drink with or without food. The '06 Monmousseau has the characteristic off-dry style, with a silky mouth-feel and flavors of pear, citrus, and sweet apple. A perfect wine for sweeter wine lovers to enjoy that will also please those who generally choose drier whites. Try it with foods that won't overpower it, like the Potato and Fennel Lasagna or the NC Rainbow Trout.
$5.50 by glass $27 by bottle
