Loire Valley Wine DinnerMonday, October 13th 7:00 - 9:30 pm The Loire Valley is a region that produces wines known for their delicate, subtle style such as the slightly sweet wines of Vouvray, delicious and elegant reds from Chinon and Champigny, and the numerous refined whites and sparkling wines from places like Touraine and Saumur. The names conjure up images of rolling hills, the vast Loire River, and Renaissance era castles, spires and villages. The grapes here are Melon de Bourgogne, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and a few other, more obscure varieties. With their ample acidity and expressive fruit flavors, these wines are incredibly good food wines, and a limitless source of inspiration in the kitchen. We'll be serving delicious, inspired food to complement the marvelous wines featured at our October Wine Dinner. The cost of this event is $45 per person. Space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this event at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. |

"Making the Grass Greener" Mixed media paintings by Jenifer Padilla Now - November 30, 2008 About the Artist: "My work is directly influenced by my surroundings, my travel experiences, and by food—especially the delicate shapes, textures and colors of fruit, the mark of graffiti and tag art, the shapes and lines created by cityscapes, mass transit, and the trains that pass by." - Jenifer Padilla Padilla is a graduate of the North Carolina State University College of Design and has studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco, Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy and La Llotja Escola d'Art in Barcelona, Spain. Currently, she works in a renovated warehouse in downtown Carrboro, a space she shares with other artists and writers. Her paintings are informed by a variety of media including photography, sketches, Xerox, and 8mm film. The title of her current show "Making the grass greener" is a study in taking what is in front of you and making it "greener" or appreciating what you have and seeing it in a new light. Her most recent paintings focus on what's in season right now—from poison ivy to cherries to her new studio space. Previously, Padilla was a member of the Antfarm, a cooperative studio in downtown Raleigh, housed in the former home of the Raleigh Washboard Factory. Its rustic, urban surroundings and the collective experience of a co-op environment greatly influenced her work. While in Barcelona, Padilla studied with world renowned Spanish artists Tom Carr and Carmen Miguel. Of this experience, Padilla says, "Barcelona was the most artistic and inspiring city I have ever visited. I was amazed by all the incredible graffiti, museums, public art, architecture, mass transit, oceans, design, city planning, performance art, and landscapes." Our special wine this month is2005 Reserve des Vignerons Saumur Rouge Located at the top of the Saint Cyr en Bourg hill, The Saumur Cave des Vignerons looks like a temple of wine surrounded by vines. The white limestone, locally known as tuffeau, was first extracted by monks to build churches, houses and the famous Loire Valley chateaux. The site was bought by local winegrowers in 1957, who wanted to combine their experience and expertise to meet future challenges. This excellent cooperative produces some of the most consistent quality and value wines from the Loire. Long contracts and bonuses for quality grapes encourage growers to invest time and effort in producing the best grapes for wine. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc, the wine is ruby red in color, with a refined and elegant nose. The palate is soft and ripe with hints of green peppers. The finish is long and concentrated. Excellent food pairings would include the Pappardelle on the Dinner Menu, Giacomo's Affettati Misti from the Lunch Menu, and any of our current pizzas. bottle: $24, glass: $6 |
