Spanish Wine & Food TastingMonday, November 17, 7 - 9:30 pm Spain has the most land under vine in the world and yet, because of its arid climate, is only third in production. From the cool Atlantic region of Galicia to the warmer Mediterranean climate, Spain's diverse wine producing areas have much to offer, including deep rich, alcoholic reds, light minerally whites and its famous fortified wine, sherry. We welcome Kerry Smith, certified wine educator from the Society of Wine Educators and Tryon Distributors. Delicious food pairings will be served to complement these wonderful wines. The cost of this event is $45 per person. Space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this event at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. |

Our Wine & Food Tasting events are from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Please arrive at 7pm.Our tastings are set up family style, meaning we have several tables set up to seat 8 to 10 people. There is no reserved seating unless you are with a party of 6 or more, and then you'll need to let us know in advance. Family-style also refers to food service; all food is brought out in large platters that are passed around, each portion is a tasting portion, or small plate size. There are six courses served, one is usually a dessert course and there is wine served at each one. Wine servings are 1 1/2 oz with each course. We have a guest speaker at every event that educates and guides the tasting from start to finish. We try to accommodate dietary restrictions, but advance notice is needed. Please inform the person you are buying the ticket from, or email Panzanella, and inform them of your restrictions or allergies. If you need to cancel, please do so with 24 hours notice. |

"Making the Grass Greener" Mixed media paintings by Jenifer Padilla Now - November 30, 2008 About the Artist: "My work is directly influenced by my surroundings, my travel experiences, and by food—especially the delicate shapes, textures and colors of fruit, the mark of graffiti and tag art, the shapes and lines created by cityscapes, mass transit, and the trains that pass by." - Jenifer Padilla Padilla is a graduate of the North Carolina State University College of Design and has studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco, Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy and La Llotja Escola d'Art in Barcelona, Spain. Currently, she works in a renovated warehouse in downtown Carrboro, a space she shares with other artists and writers. Her paintings are informed by a variety of media including photography, sketches, Xerox, and 8mm film. The title of her current show "Making the grass greener" is a study in taking what is in front of you and making it "greener" or appreciating what you have and seeing it in a new light. Her most recent paintings focus on what's in season right now—from poison ivy to cherries to her new studio space. Previously, Padilla was a member of the Antfarm, a cooperative studio in downtown Raleigh, housed in the former home of the Raleigh Washboard Factory. Its rustic, urban surroundings and the collective experience of a co-op environment greatly influenced her work. While in Barcelona, Padilla studied with world renowned Spanish artists Tom Carr and Carmen Miguel. Of this experience, Padilla says, "Barcelona was the most artistic and inspiring city I have ever visited. I was amazed by all the incredible graffiti, museums, public art, architecture, mass transit, oceans, design, city planning, performance art, and landscapes." Our special wine this month is La Fortuna Pinot Noir 2007, an organic wine from Lontué Valley, Chile.A favorite destination of kayakers, Lontué is an expansive valley with wide rivers and streams crisscrossing splendid mountains, woods and vineyards. This past February, Peg Todloski, wine buyer for Weaver Street Market and Panzanella, enjoyed a deliciously memorable visit to La Fortuna Winery. She was one of a handful of importers and retailers who were welcomed with open arms, glasses full of wine and a table full of fresh food from the Guell family's gardens. This family-owned and operated estate has been a working farm and vineyard since 1870. In the early 40s Modesto Guell and family purchased the property, which is now run by Daniel Guell, son of Modesto. During the last eleven years Daniel has turned this estate into one of the major producers of certified organic wines in Chile. An elegant pinot noir with old-world style, La Fortuna has medium weight and pretty cherry fruit, a hint of spice and good richness on the finish. Let it breathe in the glass while you decide on your entrée. It pairs especially well with flavorful dishes like our Grilled Eggplant Pizza, Penne Rigate, or the Braised Pork. glass: $5, bottle: $24 |
